Research of UK Magazines

                        \
My research of UK magazines

The UK magazines that are being used and out for sale in the UK

NME                                                                            ROCK CLASSIC
KERRANG

    KERRANG

Q

Many of these magazine have a catchy and snappy front cover some more writing then others but they all have the aim of an immediate addressing to the audience to have their full concentration.
however the target audience of some magazines shown above do change and have either a variety of audience or some mainly targeted to attract working class or teenage adults.
For example NME has a specific target audience and the founder of the (New Musical Express) has established himself as a well know producer for the range age from 16-19 having developed a different type to the target audience which are mainly rock middle class rural or even urban people who like fast pace music. With the new updates to the NME style of front cover having famous classic R&B artist it has attracted other consumers to by the product that has emerged it self since September 28th 2009

The other magazines which are also interesting is KERRANG which is mainly published every week and attracted million of audiences world wide because of its original KERRANG logo and representing many different famous artist. Its aims is to surprise the audience and make them get involve more as the colors chosen are bright colors. As their aim is to attract a target audiences of roughly around 16 and over as the publisher Buer has developed this magazine so that it becomes a Scremo rock type of magazine which was also helped by the editor Nichola Brown.

Since 1999 ROCK SOUND music has been published weekly by addition freeway. The target audience for this magazine is mainly 16 and over for its unique rock urban feeling to it.The people that are would mainly be interested in this type of music is punk people because the colors are mainly black and white.

The interesting thing about q music is it doesn't consistently target a specific audiences because its niche market and its producers are mainly focused of upcoming artist and to introduce them to the global industry. It has been published monthly by a group called Bauer group which has hugely developed to be a well known as a whole a very famous magazine design.this has ranged from artist such as Van Morrison to Micheal Jackson in 2009.

There is also a huge difference compared with the consumers of male and females as women have left to be given more options in choosing their style of magazine as they are well known to love fashion and design which makes the niche market in pressure to produce quality magazines at a fast rate to fulfill the needs of the aimed target audiences.from shown in the graph above and the figures it shows that there is many publisher that have some improved the quality of their magazine front cover and some that have chosen to improve their magazine front cover without the need of changing much therefore the creating of these new magazines has a big issue globally as the economy suffers because there is more money being needed to develop and produce the magazine.Compared to this present day there has been recent trends that has shown that the sale figures of magazines such as Kerrang and or healthy man or even sport has been a real success over time because there is more people being interested in those things.

The outcome by doing the research

As  a whole I am going to try and produce a magazine front cover with a genre of R&B as modern hip hop music is increasingly getting more people to by their products I think the rivalry there would be intense with my final magazine as they have as a whole a better circulation average of over 16,000.i have chosen this sub genre because its a well established famous core genre in producing better artist in generation to generation so this means that they also use good contrasting colors with the front cover catching an audiences attention immediately because of the big bold zoomed in musician. i think the EMAP would be suitable for my magazine sub genre.the best thing about my magazine is that it will be colorful and will have a specific target audiences as mainly Q don't have specific target audiences I will develop they style of the front cover making sure the font it big and bold and stylish with a famous artist.

Planning of my front cover

Planning stage  of my front cover

The school magazine follows the policies and convections of a typical school magazine. My masthead is placed right in the middle of the front cover to attract the target audience which in this case is students and some teachers who are interested to find out what students are doing across every boarder of subject choice. The issue and date number is going to be placed in the corner and underneath the master head. The main cover line is the boldest and the largest text on the screen having the text anchoring the images and making everything stand out and more clear to the students. The main cover line or in this case in my front cover the main master head is followed with a main image of me standing looking down at the master head showing that I am aware of the countdown to the new building in RHS. I have so far chosen the colour blue in the background colour and the image to fade in and contrast with the background colour to show that everything is joined together. I have set my context page to be split into two half triangles so that I could fit in the four main points. As I have researched many different context page this was the most effective way to show all the events that are taking place of the new school buildings. I made sure the date line is standing out and can be viewed by the audiences very easily. As these colour are simple and are not doll therefore it will attract various amount of readers.
To follow the codes and conventions of a school magazine my main image in my content page has been placed in the middle bottom half of the page.
The word content is located at the top left of the page. I made sure that i have enough storyline to fill my context page so that it becomes appealing to the students and teachers.
To create my school magazine I used Photoshop which is a hardware that is responsible of making a magazine designer. I found this software particularly hard to use because i never used it before but when I got the hang of things it really brightened my front cover and context page. I have identified how important choosing specific colours for your front cover magazine because that is the direct attention of the audience’s eyes and therefore needs to be eye catching. This is all helped by the Photoshop to help me choose a light blue colour so that its not too bright but it balances out brightness and darkness together making the image stand out more. I have made sure that the image covers the whole magazine and not part of it because this follows the codes and conventions of how to show and effective school magazine. At this session I managed to choose he front cover background and image. I particularly chose that specific image because it shows that I have a interesting idea in other terms as I am looking down at the countdown it shows that I’m curious and waiting until the final intervention of the school
I chose the fonts to be in that way and also that size because it shows the colour contrasting with the background and the “N” being the biggest word as the countdown goes up and the down over the “N”. The background colour is light blue contrasting with the grey to show the image as a fade therefore the words can stand out more over the light. Also I used this slogan to improve my school magazine front cover because it gave me the idea to create a magazine that has all the different activities building up to the final new school building.
As I have cropped the image I have got rid of the other parts of the image to manipulate it so that my facial expression stands out more in the shading light instead of the unwanted accessories at the background. Also I cropped the bottom part of my body to show my folded arms and my concentration and focus instead of what I am wearing.

Evaluation of my questionaire

Evaluation of questionaire

I need further research to make my school magazine more effective and to tell me something about the choices students make about the typical magazines given out in a weekly bases. The questionnaire was given to 7 pupils at different age groups to see their views about the typical normal school magazines. As I have given the questionnaire to a range of students this gives me a fair result and makes me not look biased when opinions are made about the magazines. As a result I than analysed these given result shown by the analysis in the end.
I used this questionnaire to identify what type of thing I should put on my questionnaire for student who chose the other box they would choose what other things they would want the magazines to include. This helped me understand that all pupils’ choices are different and some people prefer typical advices instead of activities, whereas some just like to have their fun. In these question I have given students a range of choices and made things more specific instead of asking random question that doesn’t relate to the front magazine page that I intend to do.
After this I will evaluate the results of all question and making sure i use these answers to my advantage when doing the context page because a will have a overall understanding of what typical things inspire students and teachers.

To get the best results when trying to find out what features is best to suit my school magazine I don't further research to try and suit this magazine front cover to everyone. So I did a questionnaire and it was given to 5 different students and year groups so I can get a range of answers back so that I have a variety of things in my magazine front cover and contexts that suites the recommended boundaries for rhs.it was chosen at random to help me make my school magazine more personal to them. Then I have analysed the result and will show it in this PowerPoint. Many students don't read the magazine and there was a 75% that don't read it at all which shows that there's isn't much entrainment in them or things they enjoyed reading.35% of the rest which are mostly teachers enjoy reading the magazines in school feeling that they want to know the different achievements student have done during school terms. As a result it shows that in my magazine I would need to put things then people enjoy and make it attractive for the targeted audiences. Some students did say that they didn't enjoy reading school magazine because there were other accessories in school that entertain them and weren't boring.

Many students around 90% or more did say they did like the school uniforms. Some gave their reasons as it looks smart and very attractive for other people outside school to see them. Teachers also commented saying that the new school uniform makes a different on the appearances of school students because they look ready to learn and don't bother to much about the way they look as it has a smart look on them already. Some students day say that the new school uniform makes them look more mature in this case they love the whole make of the new school uniform that brings a different feeling to the new creation of the school. 10% mostly students did feel that school uniforms takes away individuality and doesn't let people show their unique skills. So therefore they dislike the new school uniform. Overall this shows that the new reconstructing and changes in the new school means that it has positive impacts on some individuals and some teachers on were the school is moving in the future. This therefore shows me that I can include the changes that has been already happening and what impact it has had on people. A school logo and a picture of the school uniform will be the best solution for my school magazine.  On the other hand some individuals didn't like the school uniform and i will have to add other things that has been happening in their new school to convey the message that there's other things to look forward to in school.

Well this was the critical question that I had to ask because therefore I could find out the things that different teachers enjoy seeing and what students also enjoy seeing. Also in the opposite of this the things that they don't enjoy as much. In this case I also left an other category to see if they had any suggestion what they would like to see if the things that were there didn't suit their liking. this helped me understand that not all pupils interest are the same, but in this case I will include things about trips because that was commonly chosen by students mainly. As a result this will increase the popularity and more school magazines wouldn't go to waste because this will mean that most pupils will be encourage to read the school magazines.
The highest category chosen was trips with the least about advices for school. This means that more pupils love to see more trips update and are concerned about the amount of fun things going on in their school. If this magazine was to sell out in the street this will immediately attract many buyers because many people would be interested in seeing trips and the things that is going in school with the updates in exams dates etc and this will mainly attract parents as it will show them what things are going on in school.

50% of the students mention that they like all colours to be used in the school magazines because it makes the school magazine stand out more. I gave a range of options they can choose from and others they could suggest. As they feel that all colours make a different on the appearance and the attractiveness of the front cover of the school magazine this means that in my front cover I will have to used a range of different colours were appropriate. The rest  of the students chose blue/white and red which means that i have to include these colours as they are vital in attracting the targeted audiences. Colours that didn't associate with the school logo were not chosen so this means that they were  not appropriate to be used in some areas of the school magazine as they wouldn't be appealing to teacher and students.

The Audience type

What is an audience?

Audience is a group of people who participate in a show. For example they are the people who watch plays or see things differently. In contrast to immediate audiences, mediated audiences are composed of individuals who consume rhetorical texts in a manner that is different from the time or place in which the speaker presents a text. Audiences who consume texts or speeches through television, radio, and Internet are considered mediated audiences because those mediums separate the mediators and the audience. Understanding the size and composition of mediated audiences can be difficult because mediums such as television, radio, and Internet can displace and have different view points all the time.

Why do we need to study audience?

We need to study audience to understand the concept of individual’s views on certain advertisement so they have their own point of views on particular genre.

Niche Market

Niche market is a product which focuses on a specific audience type. Therefore the market niche defines the specific feature which is aimed at satisfying market needs. For example the price can play a big role on the decisions that are made for the product. Likewise spots channels like ESPN Star Sport, Fox, sky sports are all small segment market.it is aimed to a wide demographic audience with a low price which meets the needs of the relevant audience type.

Mass market

The mass market is a general business term describing the largest group of consumers for a specified industry product. It is the opposite extreme of the term niche market. The mass market is the group of consumers who occupy the overwhelming mass of a bell curve for common household products, i.e. they could be tagged as being "average".

Segmentation

Segmentation is the process of dividing markets.  It’s to split those customers who are valued more than some other customers who are in the lower hierarchy.
Segmentation is also to do with the customer’s values and therefore the relationship between customer and markets. This either benefits the audiences or either the market. There is the possibility that different customer might have different needs and might be aiming for a different attraction or affect. However if the customers are a frontline segmentation, it’s important to create profile groups that’s suites the general population group.
Marketing is important for personalisation and also customising the product. For example one factor that affects this dilemma is the rankings of different age groups. It can have a big influence on the way you deliver certain massages as their viewpoints to the general topic might be differently interrupted by the youthful population. As a result the marketing would therefore customise their product suiting a typical age group that they would want to attract.
